Gospel of Salvation, Pelastuksen Evankeliumi

In the eleventh verse, the apostle tells his Ephesians that they, too, had obtained an inheritance in Chirst, and he reminds them of the means by which this happened in verse thirteen: ”After that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation.” (Eph. 1:13)

Now, these words must be well noted and carefully considered, for they indicate the only way and means of becoming a partaker of Christ. Here, the apostle clearly states that we become partakers of Christ by the hearing of the Gospel, just as he states elsewhere: ”Faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God” (Rom. 10:17). Let whoever wants to come to Christ and own salvation take out the word of the Gospel and read it whenever possible so that the Holy Spirit may through the word enlighten him or her with His gifts bringing true knowledge of Christ by faith. Without this, all works, efforts and diligence are useless, even if we tortured our bodies until we bled, prayed night and day on our knees, lived alone in the wilderness and clothed ourselves in rags! Do what you will, you will still not find peace for your conscience nor become a partaker of Christ if God does not enlighten you in the knowledge of Christ through the hearing of the message of the Gospel. This is why the Gospel message is more precious than heaven and earth. Indeed, heaven and earth with all they contain cannot help bring even one lost sinner to Christ or lead him to partake of Him. This is accomplished only by the Holy Spirit through the Gospel message. How precious this word should be to us then! Indeed, we should study it and meditate upon it when we get up in the morning and when we retire at night, when we are moving or when we are sitting, when we are partaking of food or drink. For this is the means by which we can find Christ, trust in Him and lay hold on eternal life.

An excellent example comes to mind here.

Our doctrinal father, the great man of faith and noble preacher of the Gospel, Martin Luther, had spent years searching for salvation by his own works, by diligent prayer, fasting, by keeping late vigil, and by devout yearning. Nevertheless, he always felt judgment in his conscience and was never able to be at peace with God and come to know Christ. Finally, this word of the Gospel came to him: ”The just shall live by faith” (Rom. 1:17). To him, this was a remarkable statement! He did not yet understand the substance of it but it was always on his mind. Whatever he set about to do in his own holiness, he would always hear these words in his heart: ”The just shall live by faith.” He wondered at this statement but did not understand it. It kept coming into his mind even if he didn`t want it to. Finally, this word became clear to him by the Holy Spirit. He writes about it this way: ”Then I grasped that the justice of God is that righteousness by which through grace and sheer mercy God justifies us through faith. Thereupon I felt myself to be reborn and to have gone through open doors into paradise. The whole of Scripture took on a new meaning, and whereas before the ”justice of God” had filled me with hate, now it became to me inexpressibly sweet in greater love. This passage of Paul became to me a gate to heaven …” (Roland H. Bainton, Here I Stand: A Life of Martin
Luther, Abingdon Press, New York, 1950, p. 65.)

(Ef. 1:13)

Näitä sanoja on pidettävä hyvin merkittävinä ja niitä on tarkkaan tutkisteltava, sillä niissä osoitetaan ainoa tie ja väline Kristuksen
osallisuuteen.

  1. Therefore, beware of these preachers of righteousness by works, who indeed come to you in the likeness of angels of light. Learn to recognize and spot them by their teaching: ’If you do this and that, you will be saved.’ They are never able to direct you to believe, as a free child of grace, in Jesus Christ, which would truly refresh your heart and renew your mind as well as give you a sincere desire to do what is good. Although for the sake of appearance they may speak a good deal about Christ, they will not let you approach Him to believe without condition in the grace and forgiveness of sins in Christ. Rather, they counsel you to do works as a slave to earn salvation.

Vaikka he puhuisivat näön vuoksi Kristuksesta kuinka paljon hyvänsä, he eivät kuitenkaan päästä sinua hänen tykönsä uskomaan armoon ja syntien anteeksisaamista hänessä ilman ehtoja. Päinvastoin he neuvovat tekemään orjan töitä pelastuksen ansaitsemiseksi.

  2. Not only on this account but also in order to afford saddened consciences dependable and reliable comfort and to give due honor to the merit of Christ and the grace of God, Scripture teaches that the righteousness of faith before God consists solely in a gracious reconciliation or the forgiveness of sins, which is bestowed upon us by pure grace because of the unique merit of Christ, the mediator, and which we receive only by faith in the promise of the Gospel. Accordingly in justification before God faith trusts neither in contrition nor in love nor in other virtues, but solely in Christ and (in him) in his perfect obedience with which he fulfilled the law of God in our stead and which is reckoned to the believers as righteousness. Neither is contrition nor love nor any other virtue the means and instrument with and through which we could receive and accept the grace of God, the merit of Christ, and the forgiveness of sins offered to us in the promise of the Gospel, but only faith. (Rom. 4:6-8, 2. Cor. 5:19-21, Luke 18:13)

  3. The Holy Spirit makes of many flesh and many bodies one flesh and one body (…) for, as we see what great grace we have received in Christ, our heart rejoices in having someone toward whom we can do good according to Christ’s example.

Pyhä Henki tekee monesta lihasta ja monesta ruumiista yhden lihan ja yhden ruumiin – sillä nähdessämme, kuinka suuren armon olemme saaneet Kristukselta, sydämemme iloitsee siitä, että meillä on edes joku, jolle voimme Kristuksen esikuvan mukaisesti tehdä hyvää.

  4. Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as ever you can.

Tee kaikki hyvä minkä voit, kaikin keinoin mitä voit, kaikilla tavoilla joilla voit, kaikissa paikoissa joissa voit, kaikkina aikoina joina voit, kaikille niille joille voit, niin kauan kuin ikinä voit.
